Billy May Arrangements 1939-1995

Billy May (1916-2004) was an American arranger, composer, musician, and bandleader. The collection chiefly consists of holograph or photocopied manuscript scores, parts, lead sheets, and manuscript sketches. Additional materials include printed scores, part changes, film cues, and a handful of counterpoint exercises.

May began his career as trumpeter and arranger for Charlie Barnet's big band. He was best known for his collaborations with Frank Sinatra. The son of italian immigrants, Frank Sinatra began singing and doing impersonations in school which led to his future career as singer with the Hoboken Four in 1935. The quartet broke up in 1936 and Frank started working his way through the music industry until he finally got his big break in 1940.
